The UIL state basketball playoffs will be in full swing tonight with boys teams battling in bi-district action while the girls head into the regional quarterfinals.
The Guyer Wildcats, Denton Broncos and the Sanger Indians will be involved in bi-district play while the Argyle and Krum girls clash in a Region II quarterfinal game.
Guyer, the District 5-4A champion, will meet Saginaw, runner-up in District 6-4A, at 8 p.m. at Keller Timber Creek High School. Preceding that game at 6 p.m. will be the Denton Broncos against Saginaw Boswell. Sanger will play Carrollton Ranchview in a Class 3A bi-district clash in Lake Dallas at 7:30 p.m.
TWU’s Kitty Magee Arena will be the site for the Region II quarterfinal meeting between Argyle and Krum at 8 p.m. Argyle, runner-up in District 10-3A, is coming off a 55-39 victory over Dallas Wilmer-Hutchins in the area round. The Lady Eagles are currently 28-6 on the season.
Krum, the 9-3A champion, comes into the meeting following a 70-53 victory over Princeton in the area round. The Lady Bobcats are currently ranked No. 2 in the state in the latest Texas Girls Coaches Association poll and are 26-6 on the season. Tonight’s winner will advance to the Region II semifinals at Texas A&M-Commerce at 8 p.m. Friday against the winner between Liberty-Eylau and Crandall.
Guyer won the 5-4A crown, its first district title in school history, by going 13-1 in league play and is 23-6 overall heading into tonight’s game with Saginaw (21-9). Tonight’s winner will advance to the area round later this week and will meet the winner between Everman and Fort Worth Arlington Heights.
Denton will head into tonight’s contest with Saginaw Boswell with a 16-14 record overall but was 11-3 in 5-4A play to finish in third place. Saginaw Boswell enters the game with a 19-8 record. Tonight’s winner will move into the area round and will face the winner between Waco High and Fort Worth Trimble Tech later in the week.
Sanger finished third in District 9-3A, behind Decatur at Gainesville, and carries a 15-16 record into its meeting with Ranchview (10-16), the second-place finisher behind Argyle in 10-3A.
Argyle and Ponder both drew first-round byes after winning Districts 10-3A and 9-2A, respectively. Those teams will begin play later this week.
