Fans of Denton school district basketball once again will be able to gather in one place to watch their teams in the playoffs tonight when the Denton and Guyer boys play in an area-round doubleheader — three days after both teams won in a bi-district doubleheader.
Denton (17-15) will open the twin bill at Justin Northwest with a 6:30 p.m. game against Fort Worth Trimble Tech (24-7) after the Broncos earned their first playoff win since 2005 on Tuesday. Denton finished third in District 5-4A behind Guyer and Trophy Club Nelson, while Trimble Tech won the 7-4A title and is No. 23 in the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches Class 4A poll.
Following the conclusion of that game, Guyer (24-6) will face Fort Worth Arlington Heights (19-11), the third-place team out of District 7-4A.
If Denton and Guyer win, they would meet for a third time this season at the Super Pit for the right to move on to the Class 4A Region I tournament in Snyder. Guyer swept the regular-season series.
In regional tournament action, the Krum girls will face Texarkana Liberty-Eylau (26-4) at 8 tonight at Texas A&M-Commerce. If the No. 5 Lady Cats (27-6) get past Liberty-Eylau, they will face the Pittsburg-Celina winner on Saturday afternoon for a trip to the Class 3A state tournament in Austin.
The No. 9 Argyle boys (25-9), the defending Class 3A champions, will face Wilmer-Hutchins (22-9) at 7:30 tonight at Carrollton Creekview.
In first-round TAPPS action, the No. 3 Liberty Christian boys (31-6) will face Laredo St. Augustine at 8:30 tonight at College Station High School. The No. 10 Liberty girls (22-14) will square off with Houston St. Pius X at 8:30 p.m. at College Station A&M Consolidated.
