Boys wrestling: Argyle’s Roth wins state championship

AUSTIN — On his first trip to the Class 4A state tournament, Argyle freshman Chase Roth came away with the ultimate prize.

Roth defeated Carrollton Creekview junior Jorge Santos 7-1 to claim the state title in the 106-pound weight class. Roth finished the year with a record of 29-1.

This year, the University Interscholastic League split the weight classes between 5A and 4A for the first time. Roth bested 15 opponents at the state tournament.

Argyle also sent freshman Tanner Kuketz (113 pounds) and senior Cutler McMartin (132) to Austin.

Kuketz (12-1) was defeated 9-2 by Beeville Jones senior Rogelio Salazar in the quarterfinals. McMartin was pinned by Canyon Randall junior Jacob Rubio at the 3:07 mark in the opening round.
