Roundup: One-hitter sinks Broncos

DENISON — Zach Kubala was just too much for the Denton Broncos to handle Friday as he hurled a one-hitter to lead Prosper to a 5-0 victory in the Denison Yellow Jackets tournament.

Denton, however, rebounded quickly and rolled to a 5-0 victory over Denison later in the day.

Kubala went the distance, fanning 13 and walking just two. The Broncos’ Malik Minter suffered the loss, allowing three hits, walking four and striking out one in four innings. Luke Satterfield went two innings in relief, allowing four hits.

The Eagles broke a scoreless tie in the third with three runs and then added two insurance runs in the fifth.

Dakota Soward collected the only Denton hit, a second-inning single.

Against Denison, the Broncos (6-7) came up with only five hits but were able to score five times in the second inning, sparked by a two-run single by David Morris.

Mark Johnson picked up the pitching victory for Denton, going six innings, striking out four and walking two. Zach Torres picked up the save by getting the final three outs.

Van Alstyne tournament

VAN ALSTYNE — Parker Mushinski, Dillon Harp and Branden Boyzuick each had a home run to lead Argyle to a 15-0 shutout over Anna.

Mushinski also had a double and led the Eagles (11-2) from the mound allowing only two hits.

In Friday’s first game, Seth Jones led Argyle from the mound to a 10-2 victory over Whitewright. Jones allowed two runs on three hits.

Dillon Harp had two doubles for Argyle in the opener.

 

Tournament of Champions

FRISCO — Despite Liberty Christian putting up all eight runs over the first three innings, Frisco rallied in the fifth and six innings for a 9-8 victory in the Tournament of Champions.

Ethan Luna recorded the loss for Liberty, allowing nine runs on 13 hits.

Wade Oliver and Connor McMann each had a double the Warriors.

Earlier, Connor McMann and Foster Ford each homered to lead Liberty Christian to a 14-4 victory over Frisco Heritage.

Hayden Holley recorded the win for the Warriors, allowing four runs on six hits.

Softball

Pilot Point 2, Sunnyvale 1

SUNNYVALE — Skylar Cagle pitched a no-hitter and went 3 for 3 at the plate to lead the Lady Cats past Sunnyvale.

The victory kept Pilot Point unbeaten at 15-0-1.

Cagle’s big hit for was a two-run double in the third.

Ponder 10, Brock 2

BROCK — Ponder improved to 9-6 on the season after defeating Brock.

Jessica Orozco led the Lady Lions at the plate and in the circle. She had a double and allowed two runs on four hits.

Girls soccer

Guyer 2, Argyle 0

Megan Stokes assisted on both goals to help the Guyer Lady Wildcats improve to 8-0 in District 11-4A with a 2-0 win at home over Argyle.

Stokes assisted Hannah Alspach 19 minutes into the first half to put Guyer (19-1) up for good. Stokes then helped finish the scoring 19 minutes into the second half with an assist to Peyton Draper.

 

Boys soccer

Guyer 2, Argyle 0

McKenna Cook and Sean Diamond each scored a goal to lead the Wildcats to the shutout of Argyle in District 11-4A play.
