Baseball/Softball roundup: Medford wins 300th as Guyer routs Wichita Falls

Comments () A Text Size

Megan Washam hit her team-leading fifth home run of the season — this one of the walk-off variety — as her three-run blast completed the Guyer softball team’s 15-0 run-rule victory of Wichita Falls in the third inning to give head coach Keith Medford his 300th career victory.

Washam’s home run puts her just two shy of tying the school record of seven home runs in a season set by former standout Layne Greenlee, who is now at Wichita State. Fellow senior Kennedy Been also homered for the Wildcats (17-2-1, 5-1), while Shayne Starkey hit two triples and pitched the final inning in relief of Suzette Palmer, who pitched two innings.

Medford downplayed his personal accomplishment but added it was special to pick up his milestone victory with a group of five seniors who have played since they were freshmen and helped him pick up 94 of his 170 wins at Guyer. Medford went 130-65-1 in seven years at Irving before coming to Guyer. He is now 170-78-5 in eight years at Guyer.

“If you’re in the this business long enough, you’re going to get some numbers, and I’ve been lucky enough to be at two great places and be blessed with some incredibly talented kids, and that’s a good combination,” Medford said. “I never wanted this to be about me because you’re going to get those numbers if you stay in this business long enough.”
