FORT WORTH — After the first day of the District 5-4A tennis tournaments, there are only a few area players still alive heading into today’s finals at TCU’s Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.
The tournament’s first few rounds played to form, as it was dominated by Wichita Falls schools, but a few local players made it through to today’s finals as the top two finishers in each of the five brackets will advance to the regional tournament at Abilene’s Rose Park Tennis Center on April 15-16.
In girls doubles, Guyer’s Megan Poe and Alex Rodriguez, the No. 1 seed in the bracket, will play in today’s final against either Wichita Falls or Fort Worth Brewer. That result was unknown as of press time.
The Wildcats also had the top boys team entering the tournament and Kolos Urbanyi and Parker Metcalf lived up to their billing, making it to today’s final against the second-seeded team from Wichita Falls Rider.
Denton’s Alex Clerihew will play in the boys singles final against Wichita Falls’ Adam Dockery after defeating Dockery’s teammate, Denny Norrie, in the semifinal with a 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) victory.
In girls singles, both Guyer’s Catalina Aloman and Denton’s Rebecca Fu lost in the second round.
