Stepping into the gyms at Krum and Ponder, it’s almost impossible to ignore the basketball heritage that has graced the hardwood for decades.
This year, both schools enhanced that legacy with deep postseason runs behind the area’s top players.
Rachel Wallace of Krum and Clay Morgan of Ponder exhibited on-court prowess that made them the clear choices as the MVPs of this year’s Denton Record-Chronicle All-Area Basketball Team.
In Krum’s first year in Class 3A, Wallace led the Lady Cats to an undefeated district record and the school’s first state tournament appearance in 31 years. Wallace earned Texas Association of Basketball Coaches all-state honors for the second consecutive season and will play at Southeastern Oklahoma State next year.
Morgan also earned an all-state nod and helped Ponder reach the Class 2A Region II tournament, where the Lions lost to Brock in the final. Brock went on to lose in the state championship game.
Morgan will be back for next season to help the Lions chase the school’s fourth state championship.
