Track and field: Guyer girls, boys take 5-4A titles

First-year Guyer girls coach Megan Hardesty had a great opportunity during Tuesday’s conclusion of the District 5-4A track meet.

Her team went toe-to-toe with Trophy Club Nelson throughout the two-day meet, and the girls title came down to the final event — the 1,600-meter relay — and she was able to show her athletes the importance of every event.

Guyer won the mile relay by a wide margin over Nelson to win the championship by one point. The Lady Wildcats entered the final event down one point, and the team of Autumn Eustache, Paetyn Peterie, Leann Bell and Ola Akinniyi clinched the title.

“It’s exciting to put that much pressure on kids and watch them handle it like they did,” Hardesty said. “They didn’t even look nervous. I think I was the one that looked nervous. It was close the whole way. Byron Nelson would go up a couple of points and we’d come back. It was neat to tell the girls that every single point mattered. We had a kid get sixth in the pole vault and that point mattered. It was pretty neat to see.”

Guyer finished with 179 points — one point better than Nelson — while Denton finished third with 90 points.

Another key moment for the Lady Wildcats came in the 200-meter dash, which was swept by Guyer’s Candalyn Lyons (who also won the 100), Joyner Harris and Bell, who finished first, second and third, respectively. The Lady Bobcats finished seventh and eighth in the race and were shut out of the points.

“That was the turning point,” Hardesty said. “Had they scored a point there, that would have changed everything.”

The Lady Wildcats now will send 19 athletes to the April 26-27 regional meet at Abilene’s McMurry University.

Guyer will send 14 boys to the regional meet after rolling to the district title, beating second-place Nelson by 58 points with a score of 158.

After the the field events on first day of the meet, Wichita Falls Rider held the lead, but the Wildcats were able to make up their deficit once the running events started Tuesday.

The Wildcats, usually a 1,600 relay power, were able to win the 400 and 800 relays and finish second in the 1,600, while Jaylen Hunter won both hurdles events to put himself in position to be Guyer’s first hurdler to qualify for the state meet in Austin.

“I’m hoping and expect Jaylen Hunter to go to Austin this year if he continues to work like I know he can,” boys coach Oschlor Flemming said. “Our 4x100 and 4x200 relay teams also have a legitimate shot. The sprint relay is such a crapshoot because you have to have really good handoffs and you can go from first place to last in no time.”

The 400 relay team of Adam Scott, Anthony Taylor, Josh Harris and John Schilleci was dominant, finishing more than a second ahead of a pack comprising Nelson, Rider and Denton runners.

That was the theme of the day for the Wildcats, who won the meet without the drama the Guyer girls saw.

“I didn’t expect to win by 58 points,” Flemming said. “I figured we’d come out on top, but I didn’t expect that.”
