ARGYLE — The Argyle Eagles had a statement to make Friday night, and they delivered it loud and clear.
“Everyone was sparked up because it was senior night,” Eagles designated hitter Jerid Byer said, “and we wanted to show everybody we were ready to play.”
A 10-0 win over the Frisco Lone Star team that last month handed Argyle its only District 10-3A loss did the job.
Eagles pitcher Drew Gooch allowed only one hit and struck out nine in five innings of a game that was called after 4 1/2 innings because of the 10-run rule.
Argyle’s offense collected seven hits in four at-bats, including a 2-for-2 performance by catcher Dillon Harp, and took advantage of five Lone Star errors to score three unearned runs in a game that lasted about an hour.
“We have some guys who are heating up right now,” Argyle coach Ricky Griffin said. “And all of our seniors had a good night.”
The Eagles (23-3, 5-1 district) started five seniors — Harp, Byer, Landon Rogers, Davis Coglan and Seth Jones — and each contributed a hit and at least one run scored.
What a difference from March 26, when the same two pitchers — Gooch and the Rangers’ Tyler Levan — squared off in Frisco. Lone Star won that one 2-1 in eight innings.
“Our kid threw a real good game the first game and we hung around and got lucky at the end,” Lone Star coach Joey Franke said. “[The Eagles] remembered that and they were ready to play tonight.”
Argyle exploded for four first-inning runs and added two runs in each subsequent frame.
“The last time, we didn’t really show up to play,” Coglan said.
“We’d been kind of cruising and we really weren’t focused,” Byer added. “That was the last game we lost, so it was good to focus up, come back and get some revenge.”
Gooch touched off the Argyle offense with a one-out walk in the first. Courtesy runner Tanner Boyzuick went to second on Rogers’ single and scored on a throwing error. Harp plated Rogers with a single and scored on a wild pitch.
Byer made it 4-0 when he singled home Jones, who had walked and stolen second.
In the bottom of the second, Gooch tripled and scored Brandon Boyzuick, who had walked, and Rogers sent Gooch home with a suicide squeeze bunt.
After Jones doubled to left-center and Byer reached on a dropped fly ball, Cutter McDonald and Brandon Boyzuick had back-to-back sacrifice flyouts to make it 8-0 after three innings.
Harp and Coglan picked up one-out singles off Lone Star reliever Jordan Ruby in the fourth, and both scored on a double error by the Rangers — a throwaway at first followed by a throwaway at third.
Ben Collins produced Lone Star’s only hit of the night with one out in the first inning. Gooch retired 14 of the next 16 batters he faced, with two runners reaching base on errors.
