The Krum and Argyle boys doubles teams will meet for the second time this season, but with a championship on the line at the Class 3A Region II tennis tournament in Allen.
Argyle’s doubles team of Jack Vickery and Rafael Ortega will face Krum’s team of Zach Ripple and Jake Johnson after both teams advanced with three victories on Wednesday.
With the senior Ripple and junior Johnson winning the first match of the season against Vickery and Ortega, Krum head coach Steven Quy is confident their previous success should be at the very least a mental advantage.
“They’ve already beat the Argyle team in previous tournaments, but it’s going to be tough either way,” Quy said. “We’re feeling good about [today] either way. They are pretty evenly matched. The time we played them at the regional team tournament, we won 8-6 and that helped us get a higher seed once we were here. We were the 3 seed and 4 seed.”
Ripple and Johnson beat Paris' Marc Bawcum and Matt Kirby 6-0, 6-0 in the first round, Frisco Lone Star's Dylan McDonald and Kelvin Zhao 6-2, 6-2 in the second round and Athens' Tim Whitley and Noah Whitley 6-2, 6-1 to make it to the finals.
Vickery and Ortega beat Krum’s second doubles team of Alex Crouse and Chris Leal in the first round 6-1, 6-1. In the second round, they defeated Wills Point's John Manning and Cole Pendleton6-2, 6-2 to move on to face Bullard's Cameron Sanson and Hunter Wages, which they rallied for a 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 victory.
“They played outstanding,” Argyle head coach Kurt Spasic said of Vickery and Ortega. “They faced some controversy on the court with some calls that didn’t go their way and they were able to overcome that and come out with a win against Bullard.”
Argyle’s Luke McMullen still has a shot to make state after he beat his Melissa's Aaron Kocsis 6-2, 6-0 in the first round and Texarkana Pleasant Grove's Travis Alkire 6-0, 6-0. In the third round, McMullen fell to Dallas Madison, but may still have a chance to reach state in the playback game.
Krum’s district champion girls doubles team of Mickey Griffith and Katie Callahan was bounced in the second round. Griffith and Callahan defeated the Melissa's Sara Heimberger and Haley Heimberger 6-0, 6-0 in the first round and lost to the Wills Point's Kylie Emerson and Carlye Lide 6-2, 6-4.
Krum’s girls doubles team of Mackenzie Ripple and Michelle Perdue had the tough challenge of facing top-seeded team Spring Hill's Amy Miley and Lydia Wallis in the first round and fell 6-3, 6-2.
In girls singles, Krum’s Sarah Sprabary defeated Irving North Hill's Natalie Le 6-2, 6-3 but fell in the second round to the top-seed Mullika Seekhleo of Van High School 6-1, 6-3. Krum’s Maggie Quy lost to the fourth-seed from Wills Point, Shelby Pirtle, 6-1, 6-0.
The district champion mixed doubles squad of Chris Atterberry and Julia Schmaltz fell to Van High School’s second team, Patrick Ward and Taylor Attaway, 6-2, 6-4. Krum’s second mixed doubles duo of Anthony Hurlbut and Brittani Roy fell to Van’s first team, Jon Cauthron and Monica Martin, 6-0, 6-1.
Krum’s Jacob Atterberry fell to Dallas Madison's Bradley Loftis 6-1, 6-0 in his opening match of boys singles.
