Track notebook: Injuries can’t keep Ryan from regional

Throughout the track and field season, Ryan coach Janson Head has penciled in different names for the boys 1,600-meter relay.

Head will not stray from that pattern when the relay team joins the rest of Ryan’s athletes for the Class 5A Region I meet at Texas Tech. The team that runs today in hopes of reaching state for the third straight year had never run together before this season.

Injuries and fantastic circumstances have kept Ryan’s top lineup from circling the track. The Raiders have used an assortment of athletes to keep the relay team’s state medal hopes alive.

“For us to be in the position that we are and to have a chance to go to state, it has truly been a team effort. We’ve had a lot of guys contribute and chip in,” Head said. “It’s really hard because now we’re getting down to this point where the guys who aren’t running on it [the relay team], it gets tough on them but they’ve all contributed.”

Schools from all over the Denton area will be competing in their respective meets this weekend. The top two finishers in each event in Saturday’s finals will reach the state meet, along with the next top finisher from across the state.

Head said he plans on running A.J. George, Terrell Cross, Zac Black and Korey Chappell in today’s preliminary heat, and if the team qualifies for Saturday’s finals, he may tweak his lineup again.

Ryan’s 1,600 team finished second in the 4A state meet last year and won the event in 2011. But this year the Raiders will be fighting an uphill battle.

The move from Class 4A to 5A put Ryan in arguably the state’s toughest region for the 1,600 relay. Over the last two years, three of the top four finishers in the event have come from Region I.

The team regained Chappell’s services last week at the area meet, where the relay team finished as the runner-up, 0.73 seconds behind Colleyville Heritage.

Chappell suffered a strained hamstring and was sidelined for about a month. The senior said the absence from the track was something he wasn’t accustomed to.

“It was hard because I never missed that race before and that was my first few times missing it,” Chappell said. “But I knew my team could pull through and get it done, get the job done.”

Seniors Kyeem Turner and Darion Simon helped steady the relay team amidst absences on the team and throughout Ryan’s track and field squad.

Ryan managed to win four meets this year and finish second twice. Cross, a sophomore, said the Raiders have enjoyed their depth, especially on the relay team.

“It helps us a lot, because if we didn’t have anybody else to be able to run a fast enough time to keep us in the running to be here at regionals, it helps a lot for somebody else to be there,” Cross said.

Head said 5A Region I may be the toughest region in the country, but he remains optimistic.

“I really like our chances, even though it’s going to be tough,” Head said. “Going in, we’re .7 of a second off the fastest time run at the area meets. There was a lot of potential for us to run better. A lot of things happened the other day.”

Raiders sending three others to regionals

Sekou Clark, Randalle Williams and Mariah Young also will represent Ryan at this weekend’s regional meet in Lubbock.

Clark will participate in the shot put, while Williams will run in the 300 hurdles. Young, Ryan’s lone female participant, will participate in the long jump.

Guyer, Denton, Lake Dallas in 4A Region I meet

Coming off a victory at the District 5-4A meet, Guyer carries 20 entries into the Class 4A Region I meet at McMurry.

All three of Guyer’s boys relay teams qualified for the regional meet in Abilene, along with the girls 800 and 1,600 relays.

Lake Dallas’ 400 relay team will represent the Lady Falcons along with 10 other entries. Josh Jackson (high jump, long jump and triple jump), James Bradley (1,600 and 3,200) and Brielle Brown (100 dash and 400 relay) will participant in multiple events for Lake Dallas.

Denton’s Daniel Wilson will represent the Broncos in pole vault as the school’s lone male participant.

Argyle’s McCloud highlights 3A Region II meet

Argyle’s Spencer McCloud enters the Class 3A Region II meet at Texas A&M-Commerce as the top seed in the boys high jump.

McCloud, who has signed with Texas on a track scholarship, comes in with a seeding mark that’s four inches better than his next competitor.

Sanger’s Cody Howard joins Krum’s Cade Wall and Tanner Rankin in the event. All three enter the high jump preliminaries with a mark of 6 feet, 2 inches.

On the girls side, Krum’s Kim Robinson leads the Lady Cats into this weekend’s meet. Robinson is entered in four events (100, long jump, discus and shot put).

Robinson is one of 11 Krum qualifiers at the regional. Argyle is taking 13 qualifiers to the meet, while Sanger has 24 entrants.
