After meeting in the Class 3A Region II tennis tournament final in Allen, both the Argyle and Krum boys doubles teams will compete in the state tournament today in College Station.

The Argyle team of Jack Vickery and Rafael Ortega defeated Krum’s duo of Zach Ripple and Jake Johnson 6-2, 7-6 to secure its ticket to College Station, while Ripple and Johnson were required to win their playback match to advance to state. They did so with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Bullard’s team of Cameron Swanson and Hunter Wages.

Both teams will start their opening matches at 10 a.m. today, with Vickery and Ortega facing Lorena’s pairing of Drew Keeney and Miles Milliorn in the quarterfinals.

“They are a little bit nervous, but it’s a good nervous,” Argyle head coach Kurt Spasic said. “They’ve put in a lot of hours and practice time. I think they’ll play really good tennis, and I think they have a great chance to win state. If they play to the best of their ability and stay within themselves, things will turn out real good for them.”

With Argyle unfamiliar with Lorena’s team, Krum’s Ripple and Johnson will have the luxury of facing College Station’s Rohen Sukkawala and Kyle Miller in the quarterfinals, a team they have already faced earlier this season.

“We’ve played them before at the state team tournament, and we won 9-7 in a pro set,” Krum head coach Steven Quy said. “One of my guys had sprained ankle and fought through it, and another had a stomach bug and also fought through it. Hopefully we’re 100 percent [today] and we’ll be able to battle through that. We’re happy with the draw, and we should have a good shot.”
