Baseball Roundup: Ponder, Sanger fall in series openers

POTTSBORO — Despite going into extra innings tied at 2, the Pilot Point Lions allowed the Pottsboro Cardinals to squeeze in the winning run and fell 3-2 in eight innings.

Ponder outhit Pottsboro 8-5, but couldn’t capitalize against starter Mikey Wade.

“We hit the ball pretty well tonight, but we just couldn’t get that big hit tonight,” Ponder head coach Mark Low said.

With the loss, the Lions slipped to 16-13 on the season and 0-1 in the series. The two teams will play Game 2 of the best-of-three Class 2A playoffs series at noon today at Ponder.

Melissa 3, Sanger 1

McKINNEY — Melissa pitcher Landon Wilson outdueled Sanger’s Goose Ritzel, as the Cardinals took Game 1 of their Class 3A best-of-three playoff series.

“The whole game was a pitcher’s duel. “It came down to who could execute against the other’s pitcher,” Sanger head baseball coach Steve Ford said.

All three hits Ritzel (7-4) allowed turned into runs for Melissa.

The Indians’ only run came from Ted Wisdom, who hit a single in the first and scored on Connor Martin’s bunt.

With the loss, the Indians slipped to 21-12 on the season. The teams will play Game 2 at noon today at McKinney Boyd High School.
