In the opening minutes of Ryan’s nondistrict game against Plano on Friday night, both teams were playing on equal footing.
But after Ryan guard Morgan Davis suffered a left ankle injury in the middle of the first quarter, the game dynamically changed.
Plano senior Ogo Obinabo scored in the paint to put the Lady Wildcats ahead, and the visitors never looked back. Plano rolled to pick up a 65-42 victory at Billy Ryan Gym.
Davis did not return to the game.
“We were heavily relying on our point guards to put us in a position to score,” Ryan coach Monesha Allen said. “I thought we started working the ball really well the first few possessions. Once Morgan went out, it’s like we weren’t moving the ball as well every possession.”
Tichina Coleman led the Lady Raiders with 15 points, while Sydney Lundgren came off the bench to score 13 points and Carissa Sanders scored eight points.
Obinabo, Kylie Guthrie and Kara Mitchell each tallied 12 points for the Lady Wildcats (12-3), and Haley Shearer added 11.
Ryan (4-9) has lost three straight games since defeating Lake Dallas God’s Academy on Nov. 25.
The game was tied at 8 when Davis, who did not start, left the game favoring her left ankle. Davis’ injury was magnified when Coleman picked up her second foul with 2:20 left in the quarter.
“She just gets a little antsy and she wants to create some big plays, and creating the big plays came with fouls,” Allen said.
Obinabo’s eight first-quarter points helped Plano close the period on a 10-0 run.
Obinabo, who signed with Arkansas State in November, was effective in the paint because of Guthrie’s perimeter shooting, according to Plano coach Lynn Meger.
Guthrie knocked down four of her five 3-pointers in the first half, and Plano led 35-19 at the break.
“When you make some shots early, they’re making us take the 3 and we’re making it,” Meger said. “I think they were banking on us not getting hot there, and we just got hot there.”
By the time the fourth quarter rolled around, Meger emptied her bench as Ryan tried to keep its deficit from reaching 30 points.
Lundgren was one of the bright spots for Ryan. The sophomore knocked down a 3-pointer as time expired. Allen said Lundgren played well and the challenge with her is to control her output throughout the game.
“It’s like a spasm,” Allen said. “She hits in spurts. She’s a very spastic player, so we’re trying to tame the spasm and get it under control, because she can make some things happen.”
Playing in spurts has been what’s plagued the Lady Raiders, Allen said.
“We’ve played many a team, and we’ve put ourselves in a hole the first half,” Allen said. “In the second half, we’re fighting and climbing and digging. We’re winning those halves, but we put ourselves in such big holes that we can’t get out.”
