Starting back in early August, football teams from all across the state began preparations for the season with hopes and dreams of first reaching the playoffs and ultimately earning a spot in a state championship game.
Now, after the grind of the regular season and battling through round after round of the playoffs, 20 teams head to Arlington’s AT&T Stadium this week hoping to take home one of 10 UIL state championship trophies at the three-day event.
The championships will take on a Denton County flavor Friday when the Guyer Wildcats and Argyle Eagles attempt to claim two of those titles. Guyer will be trying to earn back-to-back Class 4A crowns as it faces San Antonio Northside Brennan at 8 p.m. in the 4A Division I title game.
Argyle will face Fairfield at 4 p.m. in the Class 3A Division II championship game.
The Wildcats (13-2) had to rally with 22 fourth-quarter points on Saturday against Highland Park for a 22-16 victory to earn their spot for the second straight year in the championship game. San Antonio Brennan (15-0) earned its berth in the finals after knocking off Houston Stratford 31-7. Last year, Guyer defeated Georgetown 48-37 in the title game.
Argyle will be making its second appearance in three years in the Class 3A Division II championship. The Eagles lost to Wimberley 21-14 in 2011. Argyle (15-0) returns to Arlington after rolling past Graham 38-14 on Saturday night. Fairfield (15-0) earned its place in the finals by defeating Sinton 56-13.
Four champions will be crowned on Thursday when the Class A and Class 2A Division I and II title games are played.
Friday’s action begins at noon when Kilgore (14-0) and Carthage (14-1) play for the Class 3A Division I championship, followed by Argyle and Fairfield at 4 p.m. and concluding with Guyer and Brennan at 8 p.m.
