Boys soccer: Broncos strong late in victory over Guyer

When Guyer scored early in the second half to erase a two-goal Denton advantage, the Wildcats seemingly had all the momentum on their side.

However, the Broncos rose to the occasion with wave after wave of pressure and scored two more goals for a 4-2 victory at Bronco Field that helped create a logjam in the District 11-4A playoff picture.

“It was a big victory because all of the teams that we play are very even, so any points we can get are important points,” Denton coach Scott Heffley said. “This is definitely a little bit more meaningful to us because it’s our crosstown rival and they have a great program, so to come in here and play well and get the result we want makes it even more special.”

Guyer is 3-3 in district play, tied with Denton (2-2-2) with six points. Argyle and Birdville are in the playoff mix, and Trophy Club Nelson was atop the district with nine points heading into Tuesday’s play.

Senior Michael Husbands got the ball rolling for the Broncos in the 13th minute as he deftly secured a crossing pass, scooted down the right side of the box with a defender breathing down his neck and ripped a shot from inside 20 yards low and past the oncoming Guyer goalkeeper.

With Denton fresh off a 5-0 defeat of Lake Dallas on Friday, the offense continued to roll. From 20 yards out, Chris Torres collected Christian Carranza’s pass and sent a ground-hugging shot inside the left post and past the diving Guyer goalkeeper for the 2-0 lead in the 20th minute.

“We rely a lot on our defense, but we’ve been working on putting the ball on frame,” Heffley said. “We felt like we’ve been creating opportunities but we haven’t done a good job of putting the ball in the back of the net. It looks like it’s paying off, and tonight we needed every single one of those goals.”

Guyer made a late push in the first half and inched to within 2-1 after Connor Bourgeios’s free kick from 35 yards out found a lane and bounced past Denton goalkeeper Christian Rodriguez.

Luis Muro evened the game at 2 in the 61st minute as he secured a free ball in the box and beat Rodriguez low to his right.

Denton was able to respond in the 68th minute as Torres corralled Diego Gonzalez’s shot that fell right to him on the doorstep of Guyer’s goal line, and he buried it past a Guyer defender to restore Denton’s lead at 3-2.

“Those are exactly the types of situations you like to see because you want to see how we respond to that, and tonight we did a good job responding and battling back,” Heffley said. “If we want to have any chance of making the playoffs or doing anything in the playoffs, we have to be able to respond when we have any adversity, and I thought we took a large step toward that tonight.”

With Guyer picking up a red card in the final minute, Feliciano Amaya bulleted his free kick from the left side of the 10-yard line inside the right post to secure Denton’s second straight victory.
