Ponder’s Chris Aivaliotis almost came away with a state championship victory in Saturday’s Texas High School Powerlifting Association Division III championships.
At Abilene’s Taylor County Expo Center, Aivaliotis finished second in the 275.5-pound weight class with a school-record 1,765 total pounds. Aivaliotis squatted 750 pounds, bench-pressed 425 pounds and deadlifted 590 pounds, all of which were school records.
He finished the championship tied with Ben Bolt-Palito Blanco’s Lee Cook. Because Cook weighed less than Aivaliotis, he won the tiebreaker and the state championship.
In the super heavyweight class, Ponder’s Thomas Waite finished ninth with career-high 1,515 total pounds.
In the Division II championships, Krum’s Dylan Serna finished sixth in the 148-pound weight class with 1,245 total pounds.
