Denton High School's Cody Roche finished second at the District 5-4A track and field meet in the pole vault with a personal best height of 14 feet, 11/2 feet higher than his previous best. Roche, a sophomore, took second behind Wichita Falls Rider's Kyle Carpenter, who won the event with a vault of 14-9. Carpenter and Roche will advance to the Region I meet in Abilene on March 25-26.

LITTLE ELM — The Guyer track programs won’t be missed in the coming years by their District 5-4A foes.

The Guyer boys took the District 5-4A title Tuesday at Little Elm Athletic Complex, winning their fifth straight team title as a 4A program, while the Guyer girls rolled to their seventh straight in Class 4A. The boys and girls won by 80 and 109 points, respectively.

The Wildcats will be competing in the new Class 6A next year along with Trophy Club Nelson, which finished second behind Guyer in the boys division and third in the girls standings.

Guyer was in the state’s largest classification — then 5A — for the 2011 and 2012 track seasons.

“We didn’t have to do a whole lot as far as the transition goes,” said Russ Phillips, who was named the boys track coach at Guyer last month after Oschlor Flemming left to become head football coach at Fort Bend Dulles. “When you’re as talented as these kids, I just had to get them in the right spot and let them succeed.”

The top two finishers in each event at the district meet advance to the Class 4A Region I meet April 25 and 26 at Abilene’s McMurry University. The state track and field meet is May 9 and 10 at Texas’ Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin.

Guyer boys and girls were able to build big leads thanks to a dominant showing in the relays, which are worth twice as many points as individual events, as well as good showings in hurdles. Guyer’s girls won all three relay events, while the boys won the 800 relay and finished second in a photo finish in the 400 relay behind Nelson, as both teams clocked in at 43.41 seconds.

The quartet of Joyner Harris, Candalyn Lyons, Leanne Bell and Brittany Crabtree made up the winning 400 and 800 relay teams for Guyer, while Bell and Harris were part of the 1,600 relay.

Lyons added a district title in the 100.

“It’s definitely a sacrifice for those two [Bell and Harris] because they had to give up an open event if they were in all three,” said second-year Guyer girls coach Megan Hardesty. “We had to look toward our chances at regionals, and our relays have a really good shot there. They made it look easy.”

In all, Guyer advanced to the regional meet in 21 of the possible 34 events — 11 boys events and 10 girls events, including several that saw Guyer finish first and second.

Phillips said the key for the boys was their success in the field events, as Guyer won the triple jump Tuesday with Jacobi Jefferson and had the long jump champ Monday in Ethan Toy, who also finished second in the triple jump.

“We picked up a lot more field event points than last year, which was huge,” Phillips said. “That set the tone for the two days, in my opinion. Kids were competing extremely hard, and that got us going. When we hit the track, we knew we had a good chance.”

Denton’s April Pena advanced to regionals in the 400 and the high jump, which she won with a jump of 5 feet 2 inches. The Denton boys advanced Cody Roche (pole vault), Rowdy Clark (shot put) and Alex Goff (800).

The Broncos also saw Ke’von Buris advance by winning the 100 in 10.36. Their 800 relay squad moved on after finishing second to Guyer. The Guyer 800 relay team of Logien Franklin, Anthony Taylor, Jerrod Heard and Jalen Hunter has the ninth-best time in the nation this year, according to

Lake Dallas qualified for regionals in seven events. The Falcons scored victories in the boys high jump (Josh Jackson, 6-9) the girls 400 (Taylor Davis) and the girls 200 (Brielle Brown).
