Baseball: Argyle defeats Celina for title

CELINA — Argyle’s Drew Gooch gave up one hit through the first five innings of Friday’s District 10-3A showdown at Celina but impressively still faced the minimum number of batters thanks to a double play in the second inning.

That was the type of dominating performance the Eagles hoped to get from their star pitcher, who tossed a two-hitter and struck out eight in six innings of work to lead Argyle to a 10-2 win and the outright district title.

The Eagles (21-7-1, 8-0 district) have won seven straight district crowns under head coach Ricky Griffin. Both teams came in separated by one game in the standings, but Argyle put the game away with six runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth to hand Celina (16-11, 6-2) its only two district losses.

“We definitely wanted to win this and send a message that we are here to play [in playoffs],” said Gooch, who gave up just one run in those six innings. “I don’t like having bad games [on the mound]; I try to do my very best for the team every time.”

Argyle — ranked sixth in 3A by the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association — will face the fourth place team from District 9-3A in the first round of playoffs, which could be Decatur, Bridgeport or Krum.

“Either way, I like my team’s chances in the playoffs,” Griffin said. “I like our pitching depth, and I like how we are doing a good job of putting the ball in play. When we get runners on base, we do a great job of putting a lot of pressure on opposing defenses.”

That was certainly the case Friday.

The Eagles were already leading 2-0 when they had their big fifth inning. Tanner Boyzuick started the surge with an RBI bloop single past second base, then with the bases loaded, Argyle scored again on a wild pitch to move ahead 4-0. After Ryley Balch reached on a dropped third strike to again load the bases, Brandon Boyzuick slapped an RBI single for a 5-0 lead.

Celina — which had five errors in the game — gave up three more runs before the end of the inning. Two of those runs scored off a bad pick-off attempt at third base. Argyle scored two more runs in the sixth to take a commanding 10-0 lead.

Meanwhile, Gooch was rolling through the Bobcats’ lineup. After giving up one hit in the bottom of the second, he didn’t surrender another hit until the sixth. Celina scored in that inning, but Gooch worked out of the jam — which included two Argyle errors. Celina added another run in the seventh with Argyle’s Quinton Rockwell on the mound.

“I felt like we put a complete game together tonight,” Griffin said. “I thought we did that before when we played Frisco Lone Star, and we did it again tonight. It was a good win for us.”
