Track and field: Sanger boys capture area championship

ARGYLE — The Sanger Indians and Argyle Eagles will be well represented next week at the Class 3A Region II track and field championships in Commerce after strong showings at the District 9-3A/10-3A Area meet on Thursday.

Sanger, the 9-3A champion, claimed the boys title after racking up 130 point to edge Decatur, also from 9-3A, with 114 points. Argyle finished third at 109, with Celina taking fourth at 106. Frisco Lone Star took the girls’ title with 132 points, while Argyle finished second at 118.

The top four finishers in each event advance to the Region II championship next Friday and Saturday at Texas A&M-Commerce.

Sanger’s Brance Watts and Jacob Perry and Argyle’s Reese Thompson were double-winners in leading their teams to the strong finishes. Watts won the discus with a throw of 149 feet, 1/2 inch, 17 feet better than the second-place finisher. He picked up another gold medal by winning the shot put with a throw of 48-10.

Perry, who is a Texas A&M signee in cross country, won the 3,200 meters with a time of 9 minutes, 35.25 seconds and then later came back to win the 1,600 with a time of 4:21.80.

Thompson had a busy day. The University of Texas signee won the pole vault with a vault of 15-0 and also won his specialty, the 110-meter hurdles, with a time of 14.39. He finished third in the long jump (20-5 3/4) and was a second-place finisher in the 300 hurdles (41.19).

Sanger’s Kion Evans won the 100 (11.09), and the Indians qualified two relay units with second-place finishes in the 400 (42.82) and the 800 (1:29.79).

Krum’s Cade Wall, the 9-3A champion in the high jump, was the area meet winner with a leap of 6-2. Krum teammate Colton Lucas took third with a 6-0 effort.

The Argyle foursome of Brooke Robertson, Laine Lowry, Taylor Mueller and Cassi Hardgroves led the Lady Eagles to a second-place finish in the team standings by winning the 1,600 relay with a time of 3:56.54. They also took second in the 800 relay with a time of 1:46.64.

Mueller also claimed a first place in the triple jump with a leap of 35-8 1/2 and was third in the 400 with a time of 58.85. Teammate Laura Lotze won the pole vault (11-0) and was a fourth-place finisher in the 100 (13.12).

Argyle’s Laina Sorensen won the 3,200 with a time of 12:04.88.

Sanger’s Maddie Wilson, a state meet qualifier in 2013, easily won the discus event with a toss of 122-0 and finished third in the shot put (33-4 1/2).
