Girls basketball: Denton hires Ryan’s Taylor as head coach

After eight years at Ryan as an assistant coach, Erin Taylor has been selected as Denton’s next head girls basketball coach, replacing the retiring Dennis Krishka.

Taylor, a 2002 Ryan graduate, earned a bachelor’s degree at TWU and a master’s at North Texas and said staying in Denton was a big factor in taking the job.

“It was just a good opportunity for me to get to stay in Denton,” Taylor said. “I grew up here. I’m a Denton ISD kid. I went to Evers [Park Elementary], Strickland [Middle School] and Ryan. Coach [Monesha] Allen over at Ryan gave me a job. I started as the freshman coach and kind of worked my way up.”

During Taylor’s time at Ryan under Allen, she was always asking questions trying to learn the ins and outs of being a head coach.

“She gave me my start in this, and I’m forever grateful to her for that,” Taylor said. “She’s taught me a lot about coaching — dealing with kids, parents, budgets, you name it. I was probably more like a sticky booger my first couple years. I was always asking her questions and she didn’t hesitate to answer them. Learning the game in Texas, she has shared with me so much.”

Having played as a small forward at Eastern Oklahoma State, Taylor said her experience there was valuable when it comes to recognizing the intangibles of coaching.

“I learned a lot from my high school coach, but in college I think that’s when I learned a lot more,” Taylor said. “Being able to recognize offensive sets, being able to adjust on the fly — those are the things that taught me more about being a coach.”

Taylor has been a social studies teacher at Ryan and said she appreciates the teaching aspect of coaching, which she looks forward to developing at Denton.

“I think that I’m going to enjoy seeing my kids and my coaches grow,” Taylor said. “I want to see my coaches progress. If they want to be a head coach, I want to see them asking questions — the kids too. I want them to be more knowledgeable. It’s very similar to the classroom because I’m very much a teacher too. When those kids have those aha moments, I like that and I like when they have it on the floor. I really appreciate those teacher moments.”

Having already met with Denton’s team and coaches, Taylor said she feels like the team has some clear goals for next season. The Lady Broncos will move from District 5-4A, which features the likes of Guyer, Lake Dallas and Trophy Club Nelson, to District 5-5A with Fort Worth Chisholm Trail, Saginaw Boswell, Fort Worth Brewer, Saginaw, Azle and two Wichita Falls schools.

“We have some athleticism, which is exciting,” Taylor said. “They’re ready and they want to work. We’ve talked about goals that they want to accomplish next year, and going forward I see a lot of potential. I do feel like we’re in a good position to compete for a district championship and definitely make the playoffs.”

With a majority of the players from last season returning, Taylor says they’ll play an up-tempo style — an approach she prefers and expects will fit well with the personnel.

“I told the kids and coaching staff that I don’t really do much of anything slow. I don’t talk slow. I don’t walk slow. I don’t move around slow at all,” Taylor said. “I like basketball played up-tempo. That’s when it’s the most exciting. Offensively, I’ve got girls that like to go to the hole and I’m going to encourage that. We’ve got some pretty decent big girls in the middle, and we’re going to work some stuff around them.”
