FRISCO — Knocked down several times in its area-round playoff game against Bonham, Sanger kept getting back up off the mat. After drawing within a run in the bottom of the seventh, the Lady Indians had a chance to send the game to extra innings.
However, Carly Barnes grounded into a force out at third base to end the game, giving Bonham an 8-7 victory Thursday in Game 1 of a best-of-three series at Frisco Heritage.
The Lady Warriors struck first in the second inning when Sidney Sewell hit the first of her two two-run home runs. An RBI single by Kenzie Rattan gave Bonham, which defeated Dallas Madison 24-0 in a one-game bi-district playoff, a 3-0 lead.
In the second, the Lady Indians (24-9) began to chip away at the deficit with three straight singles to start the inning. Carly Barnes’ bloop single drove in Jordan Cason to get Sanger on the board at 3-1.
Sewell’s second homer to left field gave Bonham a 5-1 lead in the third. After a walk to the following batter, pitcher Kelly Mardones was pulled in favor of Morgan Turkoly.
In the bottom of the fourth, Jacee Garza’s two-run home run to left pulled the Lady Indians to within 5-3.
After shutting down the Lady Warriors with three consecutive strikeouts in the top of the fifth, Turkoly inched the Lady Indians to within 5-4 with a solo home run to right.
It looked as if Sanger had captured the momentum, but Bonham responded in the sixth with three straight RBI singles, claiming an 8-4 lead.
The Lady Indians found two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Katlyn Stamper hit an RBI single, and a wild pitch allowed Garza, who had walked, to score. Sanger had runners on the corners after Turkoly walked, but she was picked off trying to steal second, ending the threat and the inning.
Sanger head coach Jae McMinn had no comment after the game.
The Lady Indians will need to win Game 2, scheduled for 6:30 p.m. today, to force Game 3 at 2 p.m. Saturday.
