FRISCO — It’s been a long, frustrating two days for Krum.
It began with a 13-run loss Thursday and ended Friday with Krum committing five errors in a 13-3 loss in six innings that gave Princeton a sweep of the Class 3A Region II area round series at Jerri Cotten Field.
“Our defense just wasn’t there tonight,” said Krum coach Stacey Lucas, who was hoping her team could rebound from a 17-4 loss in Game 1. “That’s a very good hitting team, and I thought Kaycee [Koiner] did great pitching and hitting her spots. The defense didn’t back her up.”
Princeton (23-7) moves on to face Ferris or Celina in the regional quarterfinals. In three playoff games, the Lady Panthers have outscored opponents 60-7. That includes a 30-0 first-round win over Roosevelt.
Krum (19-15) is eliminated after making the playoffs for the first time in 15 years. Lucas’ team pulled out a tight three-game bi-district series with Argyle last week but looked overmatched against Princeton, which pounded out 14 hits on Friday while holding Krum to four.
The combination of errors and not being in the right place at the right time didn’t help. Krum had two errors through the first two innings as Princeton took a 3-1 lead. After the Lady Bobcats rallied with two runs in the top of the third to tie the game at 3-all, Princeton scratched out four runs on six hits in its half of the third.
An RBI double from Abby James kick-started the surge and gave the Lady Panthers a 4-3 lead. There were still two runners on base when Rachel Solis and Lindsey Tarby followed with back-to-back line drives at Koiner, who came close to snaring both only to have each shot barely deflect off her glove and trickle through the infield. Solis and Tarby each reached base and suddenly Princeton had a 6-3 lead.
Lyndze Curry rounded out the big inning with a sacrifice fly to give the Lady Panthers a four-run lead. They scored two runs in each of the next three innings as Krum committed three more errors.
“We are a young team, but the exciting part is we have everyone except one player coming back next year,” Lucas said. “I’m very proud of these girls. It’s been a long time since Krum even made it to the playoffs, let alone advance to the second round. We just made too many errors, errors we don’t usually make.”
