The Sanger softball team matched last season’s run to the Class 3A Region II semifinals with a handful of star players this season who led a young Lady Indians team with several starting freshmen.
That was reflected with the release of the All-District 9-3A team, which handed three superlative awards to Sanger’s older players.
Junior shortstop Morgan Turkoly, a Louisiana Tech pledge, was named the district’s most valuable player after hitting .565 with 11 home runs and 43 RBIs on the season. She hit .522 in district play with three homers and 14 RBIs.
Junior pitcher Kelly Mardones allowed just four earned runs in her seven district starts and finished the year with a 1.65 ERA and 225 strikeouts to earn the pitcher of the year nod.
Victoria Eakman capped her high school career with being named the district’s top defensive player after registering a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage behind the plate.
Krum’s Kaely Whatley was named the district’s top offensive player and was joined by five teammates on the first team, while the Lady Indians added two more players to the first team.
In District 5-4A, Guyer’s Shayne Starkey was named utility player of the year in a district loaded with ranked teams like Guyer, Azle, Fort Worth Brewer and Trophy Club Nelson. Starkey was the Lady Wildcats’ No. 1 pitcher and led the team in RBIs en route to a second-place finish in the district. Starkey was joined by Guyer’s first-team selections Tatum Branch, Sophia Popowski and Hannah Hodapp.
Lake Dallas landed Amadi Taylor, Chrisa Head, Macey Bauman and Kelsey Tuck on the first team, while Denton’s Allie Shelton and Natasha Kissell were selected.
Ryan struggled in a loaded District 5-5A with four of the state’s top 5A programs, but was represented on the first team by Carol Raabe and Maddie Quintanar.
In District 10-3A, Alyssa Bruton helped lead Argyle to its first postseason appearance by earning pitcher of the year honors. She was joined by teammates Chey Althoff and Adilen Gonzalez, who were named to the first team.
Ponder earned four superlatives on the District 9-2A team, as senior pitcher Jessica Orozco was named pitcher of the year and freshman Madison Welch was named the district’s top newcomer. Kara Parr was one of three co-utility players of the year, and Ponder head coach Paige Wells earned coach of the year honors.
Defending Class 2A state champion Pilot Point had an unexpected early exit from the playoffs, but it was well represented on the District 12-2A team, where senior Preslee Gallaway was named MVP and senior Allison Strittmatter earned offensive player of the year honors. Pilot Point also was given the coaching staff of the year honor.
