KRUM — A big third quarter and twin 100-yard rushing performances by running back Reed Flores and quarterback Caz Wojciak kept Krum unbeaten Friday night, as the Bobcats downed neighborhood rival Sanger 34-7 in District 9-3A action.
The Bobcats, 9-0 in their first season of UIL play, are 3-0 in the district and set for a title showdown next week at Gainesville. Win or lose then, Krum already has wrapped up the district’s top seed in the Class 3A small-school playoff bracket.
On a chilly night when Krum held a pregame salute for its 21 senior players, one of them — Flores — gained 171 yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries. Junior Wojciak added 114 yards and two TDs on 13 totes. Both players have topped 1,000 yards rushing for the season.
Sanger, staying winless at 0-8, fell to 0-2 in the district with games remaining against Bridgeport and Decatur.
The Indians battled the Bobcats yard for yard in the first half but gave up two easy scores after turnovers. Krum then outgained Sanger 176-35 in the third quarter — despite each team running 13 plays — and stretched a 14-0 halftime lead to 28-0.
Brandon Mann quarterbacked Sanger to its lone points, scoring from 14 yards out on the first play of the fourth quarter, and the Indians recovered an onside kick on the next play. But a bad shotgun snap and the Krum defense pushed Sanger back, and the Bobcats thwarted a fake punt attempt.
Flores scored on a 16-yard run with 9:02 left for the game’s final points.
Krum was penalized eight times for 110 yards and Sanger 14 for 150, so momentum was rare for either team.
Morgan Spraberry’s interception of a Wyatt Broxson pass for Sanger left Krum needing to go only 12 yards to score first, on a Flores’ run from a yard out late in the first quarter. Just before halftime, the Bobcats followed up Dylan Coffins’ fumble recovery and 18-yard return with a 10-yard score by Wojciak.
A 42-yard run by Flores preceded Wojciak’s 9-yard score midway through the third quarter, and a 62-yard run by Jake Fleckenstein made it 28-0 Krum with 3:06 left in the third.
