Football: Falcons use short game to beat Smith

CARROLLTON — The Lake Dallas Falcons put in a workmanlike performance to knock off Carrollton Newman Smith 28-14 at Standridge Stadium on Friday night.

The Falcons (2-1) gained 384 yards, but most of their gains were of the short variety, as they put an emphasis on the running game behind Tony Green and short passes behind quarterback Marshall Dominy.

Both had good nights. Green rushed for 93 yards and two scores, the latter of which became important late in the game when the Trojans (2-1) tried to mount a rally. Dominy, in addition to 53 rushing yards, threw for 236 yards, with 83 of that coming on a big play made possible by Roman Mitchell.

Lake Dallas was already up 14-0 when it took over at its own 17 early in the second quarter. Dominy threw a short screen pass to Mitchell, who broke a tackle, kept his feet long enough to keep his knee from hitting the ground and then broke two more tackles before splitting two defenders at midfield. From there he sprinted to the end zone for an 83-yard touchdown pass with 10:41 left in the second quarter to give the Falcons a 21-0 lead.

The Falcons controlled things for 3 1/2 quarters, as their defense kept the Trojans off balance. Newman Smith quarterback Cole Brewer had a good night on the ground, rushing for 125 yards. But the passing game was inconsistent, as Brewer was only 8 of 27 for 109 yards and a touchdown. Several of those passes were dropped and the inconsistency forced the Trojans to punt eight times.

The Trojans did make it interesting in the final six minutes, finally getting their offense untracked. Brewer connected with Garrett Browne for an 18-yard touchdown pass with 5:05 remaining. Newman Smith recovered the ensuing onside kick and turned that into a touchdown, courtesy of Andy Wordlaw’s 1-yard run with 4:34 left.

But any luck the Trojans had left evaporated, as the next onside kick fell into the hands of Lake Dallas’ Josiah Tauaefa, who caught a touchdown pass earlier in the game.
