Football: Mitchell’s four TDs keep Falcons alive

Comments () A Text Size

CORINTH— Running back Roman Mitchell had one heck of a senior night.

Mitchell scored four touchdowns — three of which came on his first four touches — as the Lake Dallas Falcons defeated Fort Worth Brewer 35-20 in District 5-4A action.

The victory kept Lake Dallas’ playoff hopes alive going into next Friday’s season finale at Azle. The Falcons (5-4, 3-3 district) need to beat the Hornets next week to clinch a postseason berth.

Mitchell touched the ball for the first time on Lake Dallas’ third play of the game, set up by Ty Boggs’ 60-yard kickoff return to open the game. Mitchell’s 29-yard touchdown romp gave the Falcons a 7-0 lead less than two minutes into the game.

After the Falcons’ defense forced a three-and-out, Mitchell fielded the punt in Falcons territory but fumbled it away. The Bears (5-4, 2-4) recovered and turned it into a 37-yard Eder Valenzuela field goal with 8:16 left in the first quarter.

That was as close as the Bears got to the Falcons. Mitchell capped the next drive with a 55-yard touchdown run on a direct snap. After the Falcons forced another punt, Mitchell fielded that punt and gutted the Bears’ coverage team for a 90-yard touchdown return to give the Falcons a 21-3 lead with 4:03 left in the first quarter.

Mitchell finished the night with 136 yards rushing on only nine attempts and caught three passes for 27 yards.

Tight end Colton Lively, another senior, scored the other touchdown for the Falcons.

Brewer’s Chris Gibson had a productive night, rushing for 167 yards on 26 carries and a touchdown. Unfortunately, the Bears were their own worst enemy much of the evening. They committed four turnovers, including a Gibson fumble on a brilliant fake punt that would have extended a drive with Brewer down 28-14.

Bears quarterback Skyler Howard rushed for 68 yards but was only 12-of-29 passing for 69 yards and a touchdown. His receiving corps didn’t pick Howard up, as they dropped several passes.
