AZLE — A pair of first-half touchdown passes from Marshall Dominy to Bryce Williams led Lake Dallas to a playoff-clinching 21-13 win over Azle on Friday night.
Actually, both teams qualified for the Class 4A playoffs as Lake Dallas (6-4 overall) forged a three-way tie for third in District 5-4A with Azle (7-3) and Trophy Club Nelson as each school finished with a 4-3 league mark, behind Denton Guyer and Wichita Falls Rider.
The three-way tie came down to a points tiebreaker since Azle, Lake Dallas and Byron Nelson were all 1-1 against each other. Had Azle lost by 12 or more points, Byron Nelson would have earned the final spot ahead of the Hornets.
Azle trimmed a 14-point deficit with a pair of second-half field goals by senior Seth Campbell, from 24 and 29 yards.
Lake Dallas had taken a 21-7 lead early in the second half on a 13-yard run by Brandon Simpson.
It was set up by an Azle fumble, one of four turnovers suffered by the Hornets.
Lake Dallas’ Josh Jackson picked off Azle quarterback Corbyn Koiner twice.
Conversely, it was a Lake Dallas fumble — the only Falcons turnover of the night — that set up the final points of the game, Campbell’s second field goal with 8:44 remaining.
Both teams played it conservatively for most of the final quarter, seeking to hold on to their playoff spots.
Dominy led Lake Dallas in rushing, gaining 101 yards on 21 carries. He was 8-of-14 passing for 71 yards, including touchdown throws of 18 and 15 yards to Williams. Williams caught six passes for 45 yards.
The Falcons went 55 yards in 10 plays the second time they had the ball, with both Dominy and Simpson quarterbacking, completing passes and scrambling for yards on the drive.
Logan Stewart’s first of three extra points made it 7-0 with 3:55 left in the opening quarter.
Azle knotted the score at 7-7 on Koiner’s 14-yard pass to Nolan Harris with 5:34 left in the half.
Koiner completed 12 of 28 passes for 156 yards with three interceptions and rushed for 62 more yards to lead his team. Harris caught six passes for 91 yards.
Lake Dallas used everything but the kitchen sink in a 14-play, 68-yard march to go up 14-7 with 32 seconds left in the first half. Simpson ran 8 yards for a first down on a fake punt, then the Falcons ran a “fumble-rooski,” where a lineman advances an intentional fumble.
Dominy picked up 12 yards on third-and-9 from the 27 and hit Williams for the go-ahead points on the next play.
