Football: Late touchdown gives Falcons victory

RICHARDSON — If Lake Dallas’ Josh Jackson continues to have performances like he did on Friday night, he’s going to make the job of first-year quarterback Dagan Haehn very easy.

Jackson, an Iowa commit, hauled in nine catches for 210 yards and four touchdowns — including the game winner with 1:24 left to seal a 44-37 win for the Falcons (1-0). Haehn, a sophomore, completed 18 of 32 passes for 240 yards.

“We needed that to do what we did tonight,” Lake Dallas coach Michael Young said of the combo of Haehn and Jackson. “If Josh doesn’t make those [plays], it puts a lot of heat on us. If people are going to play zero coverage on Josh with those safeties, Josh is going to do that to them.”

Haehn found Jackson twice for scores in the fourth quarter. The first was a 24-yard strike where Haehn stood strong in the pocket and hit Jackson wide open in the middle of the end zone. The score tied the game at 37 with 7:21 remaining and gave Lake Dallas some much needed momentum.

Richardson Pearce (0-1) rushed for 299 yards primarily with the combo of Gjordan Dumas and Geoffrey Nwarie but only led 23-20 at halftime. The momentum continued to bounce back and forth for the rest of the game, but the Falcons’ defense stiffened when it mattered most in the fourth quarter.

With Pearce facing a fourth-and-4 from the Lake Dallas 40-yard line with 3:07 left in the game, quarterback Hank Hughes came up 2 yards short.

That led to Lake Dallas’ game-winning drive. Haehn found Keegan Brewer for 15 yards, then hit Jackson down the sideline for 39. Two plays later, Jackson hauled in a 6-yard pass for the final score.

“We had five sophomores on offense and it showed the first couple of series,” Young said. “But I challenged them to keep sticking with it. They [Pearce] challenged us, but I think we did a good job of making the plays we needed to.”
