ADDISON — Liberty Christian needed only one more play to go its way and the Warriors would have made things really interesting in their TAPPS Division 1-1 contest with Trinity Christian Academy on Friday night at Tom Landry Stadium.
In a game between two teams who were as evenly matched as their identical overall and district records, the contest came down to one play. Unfortunately, for the Warriors, a desperation pass came up just short.
Quarterback Foster Ford’s pass from the Trinity 24 to a receiver in the end zone sailed just short and was intercepted by Brock Thomas at the 5 with 6.6 seconds left to preserve a 42-35 victory for the Trojans.
Liberty Christian battled all night, never leading, but never trailing by more than a touchdown in a game that was tied four times.
The Trojans (6-2, 3-1 district) took the lead for good with 1:03 remaining, when quarterback Daniel Davidson scored on a 22-yard keeper. Alexander Beiersdorf’s extra point gave TCA a 42-35 lead.
Liberty (5-3, 2-2) returned the ensuing kickoff to its 38. After one first down, Trinity was flagged for roughing the passer near midfield and the penalty moved the ball to the Trojans’ 30 with 22.9 seconds left.
Ford threw a 6-yard pass to Hunter Reece in the flat, moving the ball to the 24. On the next play, Ford rolled right and tried to hit a receiver just inside the end zone, but the pass fell short and was picked off by Thomas.
The loss spoiled what was a strong effort by the Warriors, especially by Ford. He rushed for two touchdowns and threw 172 yards and three more scores, two to Reece. Camron Cornett added 103 yards rushing, and Jon Aaron Howell gained 92 for the Warriors.
The loss also may be critical in the district race as the Warriors now fall two games behind leader Fort Worth Nolan Catholic.
Nolan plays at Liberty Christian this Friday.
The score was tied 14-14 at halftime, but TCA regained the lead on a 15-yard TD pass from Daniel Davidson to Thomas.
The Warriors came right back as Ford threw a 48-yard scoring strike to Mitchell Rowsell. The point-after was blocked and Trinity led 21-20.
The Trojans scored again on Davidson’s 9-yard pass to Tanner Snow (who had 181 yards receiving) for a 28-20 lead, but Liberty kept pace when Ford threw an 11-yard scoring pass to Reece with 36 seconds left in the third quarter. Ford threw to Josiah Hartzler for the two-point conversion and the score was tied at 28.
Trojans running back Nahshon Ellerbe, who rushed for 90 yards, put his team back up with a 3-yard run.
The Warriors were driving for another score when Ford fumbled at the Trinity 10. But the Warriors came up big defensively when they stopped Ellerbe in the backfield on fourth-and-1 at the 19 with just over four minutes left.
Ford needed just four plays to get the Warriors into the end zone with his 1-yard keeper and the score was tied at 35 with 2:32 left.
TCA was then able to go 75 yards in six plays for Davidson’s game-winning score.
