AUBREY — The Aubrey Chaparrals welcomed back some old friends for Friday’s homecoming game, folks like quarterback Kyle Lynn and tight end Collin Scribner.
But nothing was as welcome as the check mark in the win column, a 44-28 victory over previously undefeated Pilot Point. It was Aubrey’s first win of the season.
Lynn and Scribner helped deliver it by teaming on a pair of passing touchdowns.
Lynn, a junior starting for the first time this season after foot surgery in the preseason, and Scribner, a 6-foot-4, 220-pound target also coming back from injuries, hooked up for a 12-yard score as Aubrey shook off an 0-3 start to the season by jumping to a 23-0 lead on the Bearcats.
The two connected for a 33-yard score late in the game after Pilot Point had narrowed Aubrey’s lead to single digits.
Lynn also rushed for three touchdowns, two on short runs and the other on a 15-yarder. He finished with six pass completions in nine attempts for 99 yards and rushed nine times for 20 yards.
Daniel Longhenry led an Aubrey rushing game that totaled 228 yards on 52 tries and picked up 10 of the Chaps’ 21 first downs with 23 carries for 108 yards. Robert DeLaTorre added 61 yards on seven carries.
Pilot Point (3-1) scored twice in a 51-second span late in the first half to close to 23-14.
Jacob Lock returned a kickoff 96 yards to score, then the Bearcats recovered an Aubrey fumble on the ensuing kickoff and scored in two plays. The payoff came on a 5-yard run by Tristan Jurecka, who had 122 yards on 17 carries to lead all rushers in the game.
Aubrey went 66 yards in 10 plays to score with 23 seconds left in the half for a 30-14 lead at intermission.
Pilot Point took the second-half kickoff and marched 65 yards in eight straight rushing plays, scoring on Jurecka’s 24-yard run and a 2-point pass from Travis Garrett to Jarren Alexander cut the deficit to 30-22.
It stayed that way through three quarters, before a Bearcats offsides penalty on fourth down at the their 22 kept alive an Aubrey drive that Lynn capped with a 1-yard sneak for a 37-22 lead.
It was a busy night for the officials, who walked off 26 penalties for 204 total yards in the game.
The Bearcats rebounded with a 35-yard Lock kickoff return and a seven-play, 49-yard TD drive.
But after Garrett’s 6-yard scoring run made it 37-28, Aubrey’s Clay Kelly stopped Alexander on a 2-point running try, and the Bearcats failed on an onsides kickoff try with 6:47 left.
Lynn and Scribner authored the back-breaker score with 3:49 left, and Cole Cannon picked off a Garrett pass to wrap things up.
