PILOT POINT — Shaking off their first loss of the season, the Pilot Point Bearcats came out strong Friday night and handed Callisburg its first loss, 20-7, in the District 5-2A opener for both teams.

Both teams are 4-1.

Pilot Point quarterback Travis Garrett passed for 204 yards and two touchdowns, and the Bearcats’ defense limited the Wildcats to two first-half first downs in jumping to a 20-0 lead at intermission.

Callisburg gained 198 of its 237 total yards in the second half, when it teamed Dakota Tinney in the backfield with quarterback Clay McKenzie.

McKenzie rushed 19 times for 85 yards and passed for 126 yards and the Wildcats’ only score with 3:02 to play and even kicked the extra point.

Garrett completed his first nine passes for 149 yards as Pilot Point led 14-0 after the game’s first six minutes. He finished with 15 completions in 20 attempts and was intercepted twice, both by McKenzie.

Garrett threw deep for a 50-yard pass to Tristan Jurecka to set up Jurecka’s 5-yard scoring run on the game’s sixth play from scrimmage. Garrett kept for a 2-point conversion and an 8-0 Bearcats lead with 10 minutes, 6 seconds left in the first.

After a three-and-out by Callisburg, Pilot Point went 70 yards in five plays to go up 14-0 with 6:05 left in the opening period. Garrett opened the drive with a 37-yard pass to Mason Richey and capped it with a 22-yard score to Creed Bright.

Byron Whitfield’s fumble recovery late in the first half left Pilot Point only 21 yards from the Wildcats’ end zone. The Bearcats had to convert on two fourth-down plays to score as Garrett’s 7-yard pass to Richey made it 20-0 with 13 seconds left in the first half.

The Wildcats penetrated Pilot Point’s 20-yard line twice, being stopped on downs in the third quarter. But they went 74 yards in seven plays after McKenzie’s second pickoff, with the score coming on McKenzie’s 14-yard pass to Rheyce Childress.

Childress caught four passes for 78 yards to lead all receivers, while Richey had five grabs for 68 yards to lead Pilot Point.
