BOYD — Boyd Yellow Jacket running back Fino Cardona broke loose for 221 yards and four touchdowns Friday night and then intercepted a game-ending Hail Mary pass as Boyd held off Pilot Point 24-19.

The win saw the Yellow Jackets improve to 2-0 in District 5-2A and 4-2 overall. Pilot Point, also 4-2 overall, dropped to 1-1 in district.

Cardona, a junior who is Wise County’s leading rusher and scorer, topped the 1,000-yard mark for the season on a night Boyd celebrated homecoming. His 25 carries increased his season totals to 1,042 yards and 17 touchdowns.

Cardona scored on runs of 4, 64, 27 and 3 yards, averaging 8.4 yards per carry Friday; his season average is 7.8 yards per carry.

It was one of his shorter runs, a 3-yard TD on the second play of the fourth quarter, that took the lead back from Pilot Point.

That came after the Bearcats had staged a third-quarter rally from an 18-6 halftime deficit to take a 19-18 lead with 46 seconds left in the third period.

After Beau Ewton’s diving knockdown of a fourth-down pass in the end zone with 4:26 left, Pilot Point had one last chance, starting from its 7-yard line with no timeouts left.

Quarterback Travis Garrett led Pilot Point on a 16-play drive that featured two fourth-down conversions. The Bearcats reached the Yellow Jacket 17 before Boyd’s seventh sack of the game left Garrett heaving to the end zone from the 25 as time expired.

Garrett finished 12-for-21 passing for 149 yards and two touchdowns.

The Bearcats’ Jacob Lock had five catches for 82 yards, including a 34-yard scoring grab in which he took the ball away from two defenders to forge a 6-6 tie with 10:46 left in the second period. Teammate Mason Richey caught five balls for 56 yards, including the five-yarder for an 18-18 tie and a 21-yarder to set up Jarren Alexander’s two-yard run for Pilot Point’s second score.

The kick by Juan Carlos Juarez-Aguirre that made it 19-18 was the game’s only successful PAT.

Boyd answered with a four-play, 62-yard scoring drive to score the game’s final points.

After Cardona opened with a 30-yard gain, teammate Michael Partin set up the touchdown by running 31 yards on a reverse to open the fourth quarter.
