BOWIE — The Pilot Point Bearcats faced a frustrating first 22 minutes Friday night that included a pair of turnovers and a stop inside the Bowie 10-yard line.
A defensive play by Jonah Fritz put that maddening start behind the Bearcats and set them on their way to a 31-17 victory over the Bowie Jackrabbits.
Fritz tripped up Bowie quarterback Garland McCoy in the end zone with 1:39 left in the first half. Pilot Point then added a 1-yard run by quarterback Travis Garrett in the final seconds of the half to take a lead it would never relinquish.
Garrett, who was on crutches most of the week and was a game-time decision because of a strained calf, finished with 57 yards on 18 carries and two touchdowns. He added a 2-yard run with three seconds left in the third quarter that extended Pilot Point’s lead to 24-7.
Pilot Point finished with 244 yards rushing against Bowie, with Tristan Jurecka leading the way with 86 yards.
Bowie jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead, capitalizing on a Pilot Point fumble on the opening kickoff. Bowie went 37 yards in eight plays for the score, capped by Marcus Vaughan’s 5-yard run.
Bowie had a shot to extend the lead, but Pilot Point’s Zac Harrell picked off a Garland McCoy pass inside the 10-yard line.
Bowie would not find the end zone again until the final 41 seconds on a 13-yard pass from to Vaughan from McCoy.
Pilot Point held Bowie to 185 total yards.
