ABILENE — Pilot Point’s Matt Poursoltani went to the state powerlifting meet to do something no one had ever done, and he reached his goal.
Poursoltani, the defending state champion in the 275-pound weight class, set a new regional record in the bench press with a lift of 670 last week, and on Saturday he improved on that with a press of 700 pounds for a new state record. The senior easily won the event with a total of 1,900 pounds, which was 200 more than second-place Riley Woodruff of Ballinger.
Ponder’s Brennan Sooter earned a fourth-place finish in the 181-pound class. Making his third trip to the state meet, Sooter set a state record with a squat of 630 pounds. But his record did stand for long, as Jose Dominguez of Buffalo set a new mark of 650 moments later.
Pilot Point’s Riley Stottle finished seventh in the 242-pound class with a total of 1,575 pounds. Teammate John Groff was eighth in the 181-pound class with a total of 1,300 pounds. Pilot Point’s Sebastian Guerra took ninth in the 123-pound class; he finished with a total of 870 pounds.
Ponder sophomore Chris Aivaliotis made his first trip to state and finished 12th in the 242-pound class. He had a total of 1,350 pounds.
Krum’s Dylan Sema took ninth in the 148-pound class with a total of 1,125 pounds. Derek Shelby of Sanger finished 12th in the 198-pound class with a total of 1,260.
