Football: Miscues burn Pilot Point against Bonham

PILOT POINT — Pilot Point’s mistakes allowed Bonham Purple Warriors to hang around long enough Friday for Dra Smith to steal the road victory.

Smith scored on a 4-yard run with 1:07 left and then ran in the two-point try to lift the Purple Warriors to the 21-20 victory over the Bearcats at Massey Stadium.

Last year’s District 12-3A MVP ran for 44 yards on 17 carries and added 112 through the air, completing 9 of 20 attempts with an interception.

With his team down 20-13, Smith got the ball at his 35-yard line with 1:36 remaining. On first down, he connected with Greg Moses for 56 yards to get the ball to the Pilot Point 9. One play later, Smith dashed around the right end to the end zone to make it 20-19.

Bonham coach Cody Bounds elected to try for two rather than kick the extra point. Smith proved his coach right with another run around the end to paydirt to give his team its lone lead of the night.

Suddenly down, Pilot Point started with the ball at its 12 with 54 seconds left. A pass interference call moved the ball out to the 27, but the Bearcats never moved another yard.

Pilot Point had its opportunities to put Bonham away behind a big night from DaCoven Bailey. The sophomore put the Bearcats up 13-0 midway through the second quarter with his second touchdown of the night — a 5-yard reception from Travis Garrett.

Bailey opened the scoring with a 65-yard run up the middle in the first quarter. He finished with 136 yards rushing on 10 carries. He also caught four passes for 54 yards.

Bailey had a 38-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter that would have put Pilot Point up two scores called back by a holding call. The Bearcats turned the ball over on downs four plays later, giving Smith the ball and time.

Pilot Point was flagged 12 times for 120 yards and also had two turnovers, including Bonham’s Jacob Kemp 63-yard interception return that tied the game at 13 with 1:12 left in the first half.

The Bearcats broke the tie midway through the third, when Tristan Jurecka rumbled into the end zone from 14 yards out. Jurecka rushed for 102 yards on 18 carries.
