Football: Kilcrease, Whitesboro too much for Ponder in district opener

Comments () A Text Size

WHITESBORO — Running back Collin Kilcrease rushed for 270 yards and five touchdowns as the Whitesboro Bearcats rolled to a 49-19 win over the Ponder Lions in the District 5-2A opener for both teams Friday night at Bearcat Stadium.

With Kilcrease’s performance on 20 carries, the Bearcats’ back has now rushed for over 1,000 yards for the season.

Coach Eddie Gil could not remember the last time, if ever, he has had such an exciting back reach 1,000 yards so quickly in the season.

The win improved Whitesboro’s record to 3-2 for the season and 1-0 in district play. Ponder slipped to 2-3 and 0-1.

Kilcrease reached 210 yards rushing by the end of the first half, carrying the ball 10 times and scoring three touchdowns. Kilcrease’s most exciting run came on his third attempt on the ground during the Bearcats’ second offensive possession of the first quarter, when Kilcrease broke for a 91-yard run, escaping five Lions tacklers along the way.

Inefficiency plagued the Lions’ offense, as they were unable to score on six offensive possessions in the first half. The Lions’ only score came from dazzling special teams play from Trey Dunlap, who returned a kickoff for 86 yards.

Whitesboro led the Lions 35-7, having scored on four out of six first-half offensive possessions.

Even the Bearcats’ defense got in on the action, as defensive lineman Tyler Bensley nabbed an errant Reid Sanders pass and was able to return the ball 21 yards to the end zone.

The third quarter opened up with the Bearcats returning to the run, yet, they were forced to spread the ball around to their fullbacks as it became quickly apparent that Kilcrease was fatigued.

Coach Gil mentioned that as far as he could tell, Kilcrease could do it all on the field, but the back lacked the stamina to give it his all for four quarters.

Despite being fatigued, Kilcrease was able to run for an additional 44 yards on 10 attempts and score once more for the Bearcats in the second half of play.
