Football: Sanger stumbles to 0-9

SANGER — Sanger could not be more happy with how it started the game, scoring easily on its first drive, but the defense could not hold up its end of the bargain in a 47-24 defeat at the hands of the Bridgeport Bulls that keeps the Indians without a win for the season.

It didn’t look like the first drive would amount to much, as the Indians (0-9) faced third-and-long, but Brandon Mann completed a 40-yard pass to Tanner Thomas to move the chains, and Derek Shelby punched it into the end zone.

While a great opening statement, Bridgeport did not seem to notice. The Bulls scored three touchdowns in the quarter, moving the ball quickly with an explosive running attack that totaled 218 yards on the ground. Sanger’s attempts to score were stopped, and Kyle Johnson kicked a 21-yard field goal.

Bridgeport built on their chokehold in the second quarter to hold a 33-10 lead at halftime.

The third quarter started with a slightly different narrative, though. Sanger’s pass offense, a facet of the game it had revolved around two years ago, took precedence again. Quarterback Brandon Mann, who had 230 passing yards and 104 yards rushing, led two touchdown drives to give the Indians the momentum.

The passing attack was crisp, with 17 completions to six receivers. Leading the pack was Tanner Thomas (five catches, 83 yards) and Devin Teeters (four for 88). Eight of those catches were made in the second half.

Unfortunately, problems with fumbles showed up. Mann’s great game was marred by a huge fumble of a snap that Bridgeport recovered. The Bulls were then stopped on fourth-and-8, but Wyatt Broxson fumbled it right back.

Bridgeport scored in the fourth quarter on a 31-yard touchdown by Hunter Gantt to take any doubt away from the game. Gantt completed a couple of passes while rushing 17 times for 89 yards to go with his third touchdown, and even caught two passes for 46 yards.

Sanger goes on the road for its final game against Decatur next week.
