Argyle and Krum doubles teams have advanced to the state tournament, scheduled for April 29 and 30 in Austin.

Argyle’s duo of Jack Vickery and Rafael Ortega and Krum’s Zach Ripple and Jake Johnson battled it out Thursday in the Class 3A Region II tournament final in Allen, with Argyle defeating Krum 6-2, 7-6 to assure its advance to state.

“They did a great job and were ready to play outstanding tennis against the Krum team,” Argyle coach Kurt Spasic said. “They were mentally and physically prepared.”

After losing in the final to Argyle, Krum fell into a playback match against the Bullard duo of Cameron Swanson and Hunter Wages.

Krum won that match 6-2, 6-2 to advance to the state tournament at Texas’ Penick-Allison Tennis Center.

“They are relieved more than anything,” Krum coach Steven Quy said. “Argyle played really well this morning and we didn’t. We got off to a bad start, got a lead in the second set and lost it. But an hour later when we went to play the playback, it was a whole lot different. We played a lot better and we didn’t give Bullard a chance to get into it.”

Argyle’s Luke McMullen won his third-place match against Athens’ Derek Davies 6-4, 6-3 to force a playback match. McMullen fought hard for three sets but fell to Celina’s Austin Hoang 7-6, 2-6, 7-6, ending his season.

“He played well, but the [other] kids played better than he did,” Spasic said. “As long as you play well, you have to be satisfied with the results.”
