KRUM — Brennan Ellis made sure his team started the season on the right foot.
After the losing its starting quarterback from last season’s District 9-3A runner-up squad two weeks ago, Krum’s senior receiver caught three touchdowns to help the Bobcats to a 28-25 come-from-behind season-opening victory against Caddo Mills on Friday night at Bobcat Stadium.
Trailing by 12 with 4:24 left in the third quarter, Ellis, who finished with four catches for 186 yards and added 58 rushing yards, and sophomore quarterback Colten Graham connected on a 78-yard score through the air to pull Krum (1-0) within 19-14.
After forcing Caddo Mills (0-1) to punt, Graham, who completed 10 of 19 passes for 276 yards with one interception and three scores, wasted no time in going back to Ellis. Graham unleashed a 68-yard touchdown toss that gave the Bobcats their first lead of the game at 21-19 with 1:34 left in the third.
The Foxes answered with a touchdown drive of their own that went into the final quarter, ending with a 44-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Erik Richards to Trystan McGee. The try for two failed, but Caddo Mills led 25-21 lead with a little more than 10 minutes left to play.
Despite ending the night with 386 offensive yards, Krum sputtered on the next drive that ended with a punt.
With the help of an offsides penalty, Krum’s defense, which gave up 295 total yards, pushed the Foxes back to their 32-yard line. On the next play, Bobcats senior Morgan Sprayberry picked off a pass and took it 52 yards to the house for a 28-25 Krum lead with seven minutes remaining.
Caddo Mills answered with an 11-play, 53-yard drive, but the Bobcats stuffed Richards at the line on fourth down to give the ball back to the offense.
Ellis converted on third-and-3 for a first down with 45 seconds remaining, and Krum ran out the clock for the victory.
Krum finished with 70 penalty yards to just 45 marked against Caddo Mills, but all of the Foxes’ penalties came in the second half.
Richards completed 15 of 24 passes for 98 yards with an interception and a touchdown, while going for 115 yards and three scores on the ground.
Krum will next play at home against Farmersville at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
