Argyle’s first batter walked. The Lady Eagles’ second batter walked. Their third batter was hit by a pitch. Nine runs, 10 walks, two wild pitches and two hit batters later, the Lady Eagles found themselves right back in the middle of their Class 3A bi-district softball playoff series against Krum.

After dropping the opener to the Lady Cats, Argyle scored six runs in the first two innings and, with their starting lineup back on the field, dropped Krum 9-4 in Game 2 on Friday night at Denton High. That means the bi-district title will be decided in Game 3 at 10 a.m. today back at Denton.

“We didn’t let that loss [in Game 1] get us down,” Argyle coach Natalie Coonrod said. “The momentum is very much in our direction.”

Argyle (14-17) had injured starter Chey Althoff (elbow) back on the field, splitting time at catcher with Kennedy Cullum, also playing with an injury (knee). Their work behind the plate, along with pitcher Alyssa Bruton, was a key factor in getting the series back to even.

“It makes a big difference when you have your starting lineup back,” Coonrod said. “This team has great chemistry. We got some key hits and took advantage of what they gave us.”

What Krum (18-13) gave Argyle was 10 free passes and two baserunners who were hit by pitches, giving the Lady Eagles all they needed to set the tone.

After spotting Krum a run in the top of the first, Lilly Carter and Bailey Sutton were walked by Krum pitcher Kaycee Koiner, and Adilen Gonzalez was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Alyssa Bruton singled home a run, Sutton scored on a wild pitch, and two more runs scored on an error.

The Lady Eagles took advantage of more Krum miscues in the second inning. Kaylie Pool reached on an error, Carter was hit by a pitch, and Sutton walked to load the bases. Gonzalez drove in a run, and Carter scored on wild pitch to push Argyle’s lead to 6-1.

Then in the fourth, Sutton and Gonzalez led off with walks, and Bruton delivered a two-run double to give the Lady Eagles an 8-1 lead.

Krum would score three runs in the fifth when Argyle committed four errors, but the Lady Cats could not muster any more again Bruton, who gave up four runs on seven hits while striking out six. She did not allow any walks.

“The first inning was a big one for them,” said Krum coach Stacey Lucas, whose team won the opener 8-7. “We just didn’t get the job done. We were flat at the plate and that’s not normal for us. We’ve got a young team, but I thought we got the jitters out [Thursday]. We’re still in a good position. We’re a young team and this is our first time in the playoff. They have to be ready to go.”
