FRISCO — Celina took Game 1 of the battle of the Bobcats on Thursday night, handing Krum a 3-1 loss in their Class 3A Region II best-of-three playoff series at Frisco Heritage.

Celina (17-12) got timely plays on offense and solid pitching from starter Travis Entrop and reliever Camden Grant to help power the win.

“It was a pitcher’s ballgame, that’s for sure,” Celina coach James Evans said. “We took advantage of the chances we got, and Travis and Camden made it hold up.”

Krum had several scoring chances in the early innings, loading the bases in the first inning, while Lucas Mason reached third base with one out in the second. However, Entrop got out of both jams with flyball outs to keep the game scoreless.

Krum starter Colten Lucas, who tossed a three-hitter with seven strikeouts and three walks, was also sharp early with a pair of scoreless frames but saw Celina break through against him in the third for a 2-0 lead.

Celina loaded the bases with no outs against Lucas, with Preston Morse earning a walk to force in the first run. Entrop then scored on a wild pitch to help his own cause, but Celina left the bases loaded as Lucas ended the inning with back-to-back strikeouts.

“I thought we were going to get more out of that inning,” Evans said. “But we knew it was going to be tough to score against them and we were glad to get those two early runs.”

Solid defense by Krum kept Celina off the scoreboard in the fourth, thanks to a slick diving catch by outfielder Riley Marshall.

Entrop continued to keep Krum’s hitters off balance but was chased from the contest after a booming double by Colton Knierim with one out in the sixth.

Knierim moved to third on a grounder and later scored on a wild pitch, cutting the Celina lead to 2-1.

Entrop finished with nine strikeouts to get the win, scattering three hits and three walks in five-plus innings.

Celina got that run back in the bottom of the inning on a bases-loaded groundout by Cooper Harris.

Camden Grant then shut the door on Krum in the seventh, getting a pair of strikeouts to end the game and earn the save.

Game 2 of the series is at 8 p.m. today at Frisco Heritage.
