FRISCO — Krum moved on to the second round of the playoffs Saturday, defeating Celina 9-2 to close out a Class 3A Region II bi-district series at Frisco Heritage.

Krum (16-15-1) pounded out 12 hits and had three-run innings in the first and third to power the impressive Game 3 win.

“We got out of the gate quickly on offense, and that was big for us,” Krum coach Ray Miller said. “And like [Friday] night, we had a several players step up and contribute to get us those runs.”

Krum will face Ferris in the area round, setting up a rematch of last year’s area series that saw Krum sweep Ferris in two games.

In Saturday’s decisive game, Krum wasted little time getting the lead, taking advantage of two Celina errors in the opening inning for a 3-0 edge. Colten Graham and Justan Bailey drove in runs for Krum, with Logan Pierce scoring on a throwing error.

“That first inning was key for us,” Miller said. “When we got those first three runs up, it took the pressure off and our guys were able to loosen up a bit.”

The early offense proved to be more than enough for Mason Lucas, as he pitched into the sixth and struck out three with five hits allowed to get the win.

Celina (17-14) cut the lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the first, getting a sacrifice fly from Mo Robinson after a leadoff triple by Preston Morse.

Krum cranked out three more runs in the third, thanks to five straight hits to start the frame. Back-to-back RBI singles by Colton Knierim and Bailey powered the rally.

Bailey had a big day, finishing 3-for-4 with three RBIs, with Knierim adding two hits and three runs scored.

Two more runs came across for Krum in the fifth, thanks to run-scoring singles from Michael Tanttari and Pierce.

Celina got a run in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single from Robinson, but Krum answered in the sixth with an RBI groundout from Bailey for a 9-2 lead.

Celina had a final rally in the sixth, using two walks and a single by Kyle Strickland to load the bases with one out. Bailey came on in relief and got back-to-back strikeouts to end the threat.
