Softball roundup: Krum advances to regional final; Aubrey ousted

HEATH — For the second straight night, the Krum Lady Cats delivered under the pressure, posting a 1-0 win in eight innings Friday against Rusk in Game 2 of the Class 4A Region II semifinal series to advance to the regional final.

Tristan Bridges delivered another shutout with three strikeouts, while Rush pitcher Tatum Goff had 14 strikeouts.

Despite the lack of contact, Maddie Goin got the offense going in the top of the 8th inning with a leadoff triple. Avery Williams then bunted for a single and stole second before Lindsay Beutnagel sent her RBI single into right field.

With Carthage taking down Aubrey twice on Friday in Mineola in Game 2 by a score of 7-5 and 12-1 in Game 3 via five-inning run rule, Krum and Carthage will meet in the regional final. Carthage won 7-5 in Game 2 and 12-1 in five innings in Game 3.

Krum coach Bryan Chaney said he expects his team to be prepared for anything.

"It's nice for the fact that we've been battle tested in the playoffs going back to the one-run game versus Celina," Chaney said. "Coming into this series, they've been tested by great pitchers and I think we'll be prepared for the next round because of the road we've been through. They've stepped up and Tristan is always great, but our defense has been outstanding. I can't say enough about our defense."

Aubrey's season comes to an end

MINEOLA - The Lady Chaps started the Class 4A regional semifinal series on the right foot with a 5-4 win over Carthage in Game 1 on Thursday, but on Friday it was Carthage that come through in the clutch as it took down Aubrey 7-5 in Game 2 and 12-1 in Game 3 via five-inning run rule to end the Lady Chaps' season.

Aubrey tied for first place in District 11-4A and made the playoffs for the first time in four seasons, so coach Shon Ranton said he hopes the program's momentum keeps going.

"We let too many runners get into scoring position and our defensive miscues showed up more today," Ranton said. "Carthage hit the ball great in Game 3 and in Game 2 they came up with the runs in the clutch a time or two more. It was a great season. We hadn't been to the playoffs in three years and basically being district champion, it was a great step for the program in the right direction."
