BOWIE — A few weeks ago, Ryan had its two-year District 5-5A winning streak snapped by Wichita Falls Rider. Ryan had a chance to get revenge on Friday night in a match that would determine the No. 1 seed heading into the playoffs.
Rider didn't wait to get things going as it dominated the first two sets and held on to win the match, 25-14, 25-15, 22-25, 24-26, 15-12. However, Ryan refused to go down easily. Rider had trouble closing the game out and dropped the next two sets before regaining its momentum and clinch the top seed by taking the final set.
Ryan was led by a big night from Taylor Brann, who racked up a team-high 34 assists, 24 digs, two kills, two blocks and an ace. Ashley Schroeder was the leader in kills with 11, and she also had 14 digs and three blocks. Kenzi Valadez's strong defensive performance also stood out and she led the team with 26 digs and also chipped in with three assists and two aces.
Ryan will open up playoff competition against Saginaw Chisholm Trail at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Trophy club Byron Nelson.
Denton d. Denison
AUBREY — Denison fought hard with a postseason spot on the line, but Denton punched its ticket with a 25-16, 25-19, 22-25, 25-22 victory
A big offensive game for the Lady Broncos was led by Taylor Thomas' huge overall performance. She collected 23 assists, 23 kills, 21 digs, three aces and one block. Erin Ashbaugh led the team with 27 digs, and she added four kills and two blocks. Sophie Audirsch who had a team-high 25 assists while pitching in with 13 digs and one ace.
This win keeps Denton's season alive, and it will take on Aledo in the bi-district game at 7 p.m. Monday at Keller Central.
Krum d. Brock
KRUM — With playoffs starting next week, Krum competed in a warm-up game against Brock. Krum came out on top in three quick sets, 25-13, 25-15, 25-13.
Miranda and Madeline Duffy each had 12 assists to lead the charge for the Lady Bobcats. Rhett Robinson had a team-high 11 kills and eight blocks while also adding six digs. Reese Robinson also was impressive in the victory as she collected a team-high 10 digs to go with her eight kills.
Krum will take on Dallas Lincoln in its bi-district matchup at 6:30 p.m. Monday night at Loos Field House in Addison.
