Aune, Williams share All-Area MVP honors

The list of similarities between Argyle’s Austin Aune and Lake Dallas’ Dalyn Williams is a long one.

Both seniors were their teams’ leadoff hitters, played shortstop in the field, were a threat to steal bases and led their teams in every offensive category.

Both players also led their teams to the regional quarterfinals of the playoffs before their high school careers came to an end.

And both players will continue their athletic careers beyond high school. Williams is off to Dartmouth to play quarterback and also give baseball a shot.

Aune, who also played quarterback, left a football scholarship to TCU on the table — passing up the chance to play both sports collegiately — after he was drafted 89th overall by the New York Yankees in the second round of baseball’s first-year player draft.

Aune made his professional debut earlier this week, and picked up his first hit, run and RBI all in his first game with the Gulf Coast League Yankees.

While leading their respective schools at the plate, both players also led the area in many offensive categories, making the pair a clear choice to earn co-MVP honors on the Denton Record-Chronicle All-Area baseball team.

Williams’ .515 batting average was tops in the Denton area, regardless of classification, and good for top-10 status in all of Dallas-Fort Worth.

Aune’s eight home runs, using the new, less potent BBCOR bats, was good for tops in the Denton area and in the upper crust of the D-FW area. His 41 RBIs also led the Denton area, despite the fact he hit in the leadoff spot in Argyle’s order.

Both players have been cornerstones of their respective programs throughout their high school years, leaving the Eagles and Falcons with two big holes to fill in their lineups in 2013.
