JUSTIN — The momentum of Friday’s night’s football game between Trophy Club Nelson and Lake Dallas shifted quickly as the brisk autumn winds filled the air at Northwest ISD Athletic Complex.

Nelson running back Tylor Blake broke a 92-yard yard run down the right sidelines, spoiling Falcons defensive back Dante Basher’s pursuit and Lake Dallas’ comeback effort.

Blake’s run with 7:16 left proved the difference in Nelson’s 28-21 victory over Lake Dallas in a District 5-4A matchup.

“This one hurts badly, because, I think, about everything that could go wrong went wrong in the first half, and then when we got momentum back, they bust a 90-whatever-it-is-yard run,” Lake Dallas head coach Michael Young said.

Lake Dallas gained 174 yards of total offense, with the running game stifled all night. The Falcons didn’t pick up a first down on their three drives in the fourth quarter.

Lake Dallas advanced to its own 45-yard line on its final drive, but quarterback Marshall Dominy overthrew Josh Jackson on third-and-9. The ball caromed off of Jackson’s gloves, and Lake Dallas punted.

On the ensuing drive, Nelson had fourth-and-1 on its own 36-yard line, Bobcats linebacker Tyler Frisby ran a fake punt 33 yards to the Lake Dallas 31-yard line, the final run buckling the Falcons’ knees for good.

Lake Dallas (3-2, 1-1) was without defensive lineman Luke Medlicott, who is out for the year with a torn ACL. Kicker Logan Stewart missed Friday’s game with an illness. Dominy took Stewart’s spot on extra-point attempts and kick-offs.

Defensive back Roman Mitchell returned from an ankle injury after a one-game absence. Mitchell had two interceptions, including one returned for a 42-yard touchdown in the third quarter that tied the game at 21-21, capping a span of 14 points scored in four plays.

But Blake’s touchdown run shattered Lake Dallas’ momentum.

“We were all in shock that it happened,” Mitchell said of the run. “People were there. It was just missed tackles and people were getting walled off, and bad pursuit angles of course.”

Blake finished with 194 yards on 26 carries and one touchdown.

Falcons running back Tony Green had 17 carries for 59 yards and one touchdown. Dominy completed 8-of-14 passes for 75 yards with no interceptions, and he had a rushing touchdown.

From Nelson’s first drive of the game, the Bobcats (3-2, 1-1) marched down the field. Then, three yards from the end zone, Nelson quarterback Blake Clinton fumbled as he was fighting for extra yards and Lake Dallas recovered.

Lake Dallas took a 7-0 lead on an 11-play, 92-yard scoring drive capped by a two-yard touchdown run by Green. Nelson had eaten up 6:35 off the clock, only to stumble at the end zone’s doorstep, the equivalent of knocking on a door and running away before it opened.

That drive was Lake Dallas’ only bright spot of the half.

The offense sputtered. The defense surrendered first-down conversions on distances that seemed to be too long to convert. Nelson survived a slew of penalties and the costly turnover and outscored Lake Dallas 21-0 in the second quarter and led 21-7 at halftime.

“That was horrible,” Young said of the second quarter. “We had third-and-forever several different times and we didn’t make plays.”

Lake Dallas now has two difficult games against Wichita Falls Rider and Guyer.

“This is one we were really wishing to have to make it easier on us down the road,” Mitchell said.
