When Guyer and Georgetown take the field at Arlington’s Cowboys Stadium at noon Saturday, there will be a handful of all-state players on both sidelines.

The Associated Press released its Class 4A all-state team Wednesday, and Guyer right tackle Patrick Morris was named to the second team.

Voting was done by sportswriters across the state, with only regular-season statistics considered.

Morris, a 6-2, 280-pound three-year starter, finished the regular season with 27 knockdown blocks in just eight games. He graded out at 87 percent while allowing no sacks.

The senior was the key cog in an offensive line that allowed the Wildcats to rush for 2,884 yards and 52 touchdowns while averaging 8.3 yards per carry during the regular season.

“When it comes to these AP votes, no one really knows what they’re voting on,” Guyer coach John Walsh said. “You’re voting on stats. It’s hard to vote on offensive linemen. With the rushing numbers we’ve put up, he’s kind of the spokesperson for our rushing game.”

Morris, who has orally committed to TCU, is the strongest player to ever walk the halls of Guyer and became a bit of a YouTube sensation this season when he power-cleaned 385 pounds. Now he’s up to 405 pounds.

He uses that strength to lead the Wildcats’ rushing attack, which has now produced a 2,000-yard rusher (quarterback Jerrod Heard) and two 1,000-yard running backs (D.J. Breedlove and Richard Whitaker) through 15 games.

“With Patrick, he’s the strongest player I’ve coached and he’s the most physical player I’ve coached,” Walsh said. “He brings that physical presence, and everyone feeds off it. He has a nasty demeanor, and that bodes well for the style of football we play at Guyer.”

Morris was joined on the all-state team by several teammates who received honorable mention. Heard earned honorable-mention status, as did defensive end Thomas Ferguson and linebackers Terence Belton and Terrell Singleton.

Lake Dallas defensive end Graysen Schantz also received honorable mention.

Georgetown quarterback Jake Hubenak was a first-team selection after passing for 3,032 yards and 40 touchdowns during the regular season to go with five rushing scores.

Morris was joined on the second team by two Georgetown players: offensive lineman Jacob Hildebrand and safety Brandon Boone.
