Tony Mitchell has decided to return for North Texas for his sophomore season.

The 6-8 forward played just 23 games with the Mean Green after becoming eligible at the semester break and averaged 14.7 points and 10.3 rebounds a game last season when he was named the Sun Belt Conference’s Freshman of the Year.

Mitchell was projected to be selected late in the first round or early in the second of the upcoming NBA Draft.

“We are going to be a better team next year,” Mitchells aid. “I love these guys to death and want to come back. I like the college atmosphere. The league is not going anywhere.”

Mitchell signed with Missouri out of Dallas Pinkston, but was never granted eligibility by the NCAA. He enrolled at UNT and became eligible after completing 24 hours of college credit.

Mitchell had an immediate impact after gaining his eligibility. He scored in double figures in each of his first four games and surpassed the 30-point mark twice, including a 34-point, 16-rebound performance in a win over South Alabama.

“It’s huge for us because the impact he made for us from Dec.18 to the end of the season was incredible,” UNT head coach Johnny Jones said. “To know that he will be with us from preseason conditioning to individual skill work to when we start practice in October, that will give him the confidence to really play to his abilities at the highest level.”

Mitchell is confident an extra season at UNT will pay off.

“An extra year will help me to become a better player and get stronger,” Mitchell said. “I have improved on and off the court. I need another year to mature.”

Jones is confident Mitchell will end up in the NBA in the near future.

“He will play and have a very successful career in the NBA,” Jones said. “It’s refreshing to see that he is going to stay and develop his skills prior to making that transition.”
