North Texas will introduce Mike Petersen as its new women’s basketball coach this afternoon, a source close to the situation said.

Petersen just completed his eighth season at Wake Forest. He has also been a head coach at Gonzaga, New Mexico State and TCU, where he spent the 1996-99 seasons. UNT athletic director Rick Villarreal was on the staff at TCU from 1995-97.

UNT has called a 3:30 p.m. press conference to introduce Petersen, who will take over for Karen Aston, who spent just one season at UNT before leaving to become the head coach at Texas.

Petersen led Wake Forest to a 20-14 record last season and an appearance in the WNIT. He is the all-time winningest coach at Wake Forrest. He had a 126-122 record at the school and is 313-250 in 18 seasons overall.

Petersen will take over a UNT team that nearly broke a streak of losing seasons that stands at six after the Mean Green finished 15-16 last season. UNT improved by 10 wins after finishing 5-25 in its final season under Shanice Stephens.

Petersen will be UNT’s fourth coach in the last six seasons.
